Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a single walled cardboard box?

Single walled (also known as single board) boxes are a type of packing box which feature a single layer of corrugated material. This gives the box a lightweight but protective structure, suitable for everyday packaging, shipping, and storage.

There are 3 layers in total to a single wall cardboard packing box:

  1. Outer layer
  2. Fluting layer. The fluting is the “wavy” paper component you’ll see on the edge of the box
  3. Inner layer

Dependant on the manufacturer, each layer can be made from different materials which in turn offer different levels of strength. As a rule of thumb, the more recycled content in a box the weaker the box will be due to the microscopic fibres being more stretched.

During the manufacturing process the layers are securely glued together to offer increased strength and resistance against compression forces that occur when shipping, tracking, and transporting items.

What are single walled cardboard boxes best used for?

Single walled cardboard boxes are best suited for light to medium-weight items where durability is important but heavy-duty protection isn’t required. They’re commonly used for e-commerce shipping, postal parcels, retail packaging, household storage, and moving lighter goods such as clothing, books, shoes, and kitchenware. Because they are lightweight, cost-effective, and recyclable, single wall boxes are a practical choice for businesses that want reliable protection without the extra expense of double wall cartons.

What sizes are available?

Single wall boxes come in a wide variety of sizes, from small postal boxes for mailing items to large moving boxes for household goods. Use our Box Finder Tool to enter your product’s length, width and height – it will generate the best-fitting options from our stock offering to best suit your requirements.

How do I choose between single wall and double wall?

Choosing the right single wall box comes down to the size and weight of your items, the box style you prefer, and the level of protection needed.

If your items are lightweight and not fragile, single wall is a cost-effective option. If you’re shipping heavier or delicate products, double wall is the safer choice.

As a rule of thumb, pick a box that’s slightly larger than your goods so there’s room for protective filling, and make sure the thickness of the box (single wall or double wall) matches the weight you’ll be packing).

The main advantages of single-wall boxes are:

  • Lightweight: easy to handle and reduces shipping costs.
  • Cost-effective: cheaper than double wall options.
  • Eco-friendly: recyclable and biodegradable.

How do you ship your single walled boxes to me?

All of our cardboard boxes are shipped flat-packed in bundles. The size of a bundle is dependant on the size of the box. Generally, the larger the box, the less boxes will fit into a single bundle. All bundle sizes are detailed in our product tables and on each individual boxes product page.

In order to bundle boxes together, we ship them with a standard white bundle tie around the boxes. This ensures there is minimal movement during transportation, which helps to protect your goods from damage and ensure they reach you in optimal condition. The bundle tie also acts as a helpful handle to lift and manoeuvre the boxes.

How do I seal single wall boxes?

Many of the boxes we sell are the standard FEFCO “0201”, essentially meaning it has flaps on the top and bottom of the box which must be sealed using packaging tape

If you’re unsure of the style from looking at our product images, navigate to the product page and look for the “Style” attribute.

Our smooth outer surface means the tape, and any labels or document wallets, will adhere well to the surface.

Are your single wall cardboard boxes environmentally friendly?

Yes –  corrugated cardboard boxes are one of the most sustainable packaging materials available on the market. Our single wall boxes are made from a mix of kraft and test paper and, like all corrugate, they are 100% recyclable once used. Many are also produced with a high percentage of recycled fibre ranging from 60% to 100%.

By choosing any product from our range of single walled boxes, you’re using packaging that’s strong, reusable and 100% fully recyclable through standard UK recycling streams.

How much weight can a single walled box hold?

There isn’t a strict “one-size-fits-all” rule, because load capacity depends on the board grade, fluting, manufacturing quality and how the goods are packed and distributed within the box – each of our boxes in our range varies on each of these factors. However, to provide a simple, confidence-building guideline without getting too technical, we would recommend the following:

  • Small single wall boxes: 1-5kg.
  • Medium single wall boxes: 5-10kg.
  • Large single wall boxes: 10-15kg.

For heavy duty requirements or fragile items, we would recommend browsing our range of double wall boxes.

We’d recommend speaking to a member of our team if you’re unsure – we’re happy to help!

Are single wall boxes easy to assemble?

Yes, they are very simple to put together. All of our single wall boxes are supplied flat-packed to save space. To assemble your box, simply pop open the sides and fold the flaps along the creased edges. Secure the bottom of the box with standard packaging tape, and, when full, secure the top in the same manner.
